To the Women of the World
Dr. V. Mohini Giri

International Woman’s Day (IWD) is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.
As modern women, we are all aware of the right to fashion, the right to work, the right to have equal participation in life, and the right to the highest and best education in the world. But on Women’s Day, today, it is imperative to delve into the more refined rights of women and remind ourselves of the legislations and laws that protect us from several situations which may yet be unseen in our lives.
Global societies are marred by heinous crimes against women, including rape, dowry deaths, and female infanticide. Thus this International Women’s Day holds special significance for each one of us.
Domestic violence and death due to dowry issues occur frequently in countries like India. The marriages of underage girls, too, cause their own set of problems, such as infertility, overpopulation, and danger to women’s health. Women’s rights cover an array of aspects from Education and Equality to the Girl Child and Health and Well-Being. Laws are needed around Labour and Employment, the Marginalization of Women, as well as Marriage and Family Life, Prostitution, Race and Gender issues, Religion and Culture, and Reproductive rights.
I am happy that women’s movements across the globe have accelerated women-oriented policies and governments increasingly recognize women as equal co-sharers in developmental and all-around activities. Women have come into view significantly in the governments’ agendas of social reforms and initiatives, and several organizations cater to the rights of women today on a very tangible level. Women in urban area and metros benefit most from these rights. In rural areas however, traditions prove to be an obstacle to the successful enforcement of these laws.
On the professional front, the rights of women have leveraged remarkable support for the growth and development of women. From the positions of Heads of State, leaders in politics, to Executives and Managers in the corporate world, women have shown tremendous progress in their contribution to the economy.
In conclusion, my message to women across the globe: to live their lives on their own terms, with dignity and respect.
