Peace Philanthropy Award Winners: Global Fund for Women
By Kim Weichel
“I have known the founders and leaders at the Global Fund, and have organized fundraisers for them in my home in the past. I am impressed by their vision, mission, and tireless work to create a just, compassionate, and equitable world.”
I am excited to announce that our Peace Philanthropy Award this year goes to the Global Fund for Women. This award honors a person or organization that has contributed generous funds over time to meet the needs of women and to support women’s work in developing cultures of peace. We selected Global Fund for Women because of their leadership role in advancing women’s rights by making grants that support and strengthen women’s groups around the world.
The Global Fund has been a catalyst in the global women’s rights movement since 1987 by mobilizing nearly $85 million from over 20,000 individuals and institutions and in turn, providing grants to 4200 groups in 171 countries. In 2010 alone, their efforts reached 125,000 women and girls and benefited thousands more. That is truly impressive, and makes an enormous difference in the lives of women and girls.
I have known the founders and leaders at the Global Fund, and have organized fundraisers for them in my home in the past. I am impressed by their vision, mission, and tireless work to create a just, compassionate, and equitable world. They, like Peace X Peace, have fostered a truly global network of women and men committed to a world of equality and social justice. Congratulations Global Fund for Women!
