Launching the US National Action Plan for Women, Peace and Security

It was thrilling to participate yesterday in the official launch of the US National Action Plan for Women, Peace and Security. Having been part of the civil society team, meeting for over a year to provide recommendations to the US government agencies tasked with preparing this plan, it was a momentous occasion to have it come to fruition. And I felt proud of the role that Peace X Peace played!
The goal of the National Action Plan is profound – to empower half the world’s population as equal partners in preventing conflict and building peace in countries threatened and affected by war, violence, and insecurity. Achieving this goal is critical to our national and global security.
We all know that women play a crucial role in building peace, and that a true, lasting, sustainable peace can ONLY be achieved if women are involved. And yet the reality is that women have been largely excluded from official peace processes – with the result that more than half of all peace agreements fail within five years. Now this document (PDF) provides a road map for the US government to accelerate, institutionalize, and better coordinate our efforts to advance women’s inclusion in peace negotiations and conflict prevention; to protect women from sexual and gender based violence; and to ensure equal access to relief and recovery assistance.
We are one of 30 countries to have developed a National Action Plan (PDF). Peace X Peace will continue to stay involved and ensure effective implementation of the Plan that includes many specific actions, as well as encourage other countries to develop their own. I really hope this is an important step to develop a durable peace for all.
