A Letter to Arab and Muslim Women Around the World

Dear Arab and Muslim women around the world:

My name is Barbara Federman and I am a member of a group of women named Peace and Letter Society (P.A.L.S.). Our goal is to start a letter writing campaign to start a communication between women of all ages, in an attempt to make a small contribution towards a peaceful world.

This idea started after my family’s last Thanksgiving dinner. I started thinking about what I could do to make the world a better and safer place for my children and grandchildren. My dear friend Carol Kaplan suggested I read The Secret Gift by Ted Gup, a wonderful book about a businessman in Ohio in 1933, who, during the Depression, advertised in the newspaper for people to write about why they needed money ( most had no clothes or food for their family) and he would send $5 to make their Christmas holiday happy. This inspirational book made me realize what can be done with a simple idea and a letter writing campaign.

After thinking about it, I started to email friends and they emailed other friends and now we have close to 100 American women who want to be letter writing pals with Arab and Muslim women. Our goal in writing these letters is to find out about their lives and who they really are, not just what we are allowed to see from afar and through the eyes of the media and others. Maybe through our letters we can build a bridge of peace between our peoples, as women have done one by one for centuries. We give life, we don’t take it. We weave connections, we don’t tear them apart.  We would like to share our stories about our lives and our children and get to know the same about you and your lives. Our goal is to learn about your everyday life so that we can join hands for peace together.

I hope you will accept our offer to communicate with one another. We look forward to hearing about you and telling you more about ourselves.

Warm Regards,

Barbara Federman
