As you may have heard if you live in the D.C. area, Peace X Peace hosted a book signing event on Wednesday, June 13 for Aquila Ismail, author of  Of Martyrs and Marigolds.  The event featured a reading by the author of select passages, a short Q&A session, a book signing, and light refreshments.  The intimate gathering was generously hosted by our Board Chairwoman Gail Montplaisir at her beautiful apartment overlooking the Capitol, and it was one of several Ismail attended before heading home to Abu Dhabi.  Several dozen men and women were able to engage with the author and each other in one-on-one discussions of peace and the role of women in conflict situations.

Of Martyrs and Marigolds is a semi-autobiographical tale of one young woman’s experiences during the tumultuous years from the partition of the Indian sub-continent in 1947 through the separation of Pakistan and Bangladesh in the early 1970s.   The novel relates actual events witnessed by Ismail or her acquaintances and conveys the complexity of ideas of nationality and definitions of the term nation-state.  Woven within this history is a deeply romantic story of love across ethnic lines.

The event, part of our 10th anniversary celebration, was attended by guests young and old, newcomers to Peace X Peace and Peace X Peace veterans.  When Peace X Peace was founded in 2002 it was with the intention that we would encourage connections and opportunities for learning just like this, but we never anticipated the directions in which world events would take us! We are delighted that this event was so successful and hope to host many more such peace gatherings. Be sure to check your inboxes for more opportunities in the coming months and year!
