Peace X Peace Advocacy and Training Initiatives

Peace X Peace advocates for effective, sustained laws and policies that support and advance women, and provides practical skills training for women leaders. Based in Washington DC, we are active in educating Congressional leaders and advising government agencies on a range of policy and legislation. We collaborate with United Nations agencies and initiatives and offer Transformational Peace Leadership Training. In particular, we:

Support legislation that advances the rights of women, including the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA). IVAWA would incorporate solutions into all U.S. foreign assistance programs, such as promoting women’s economic opportunity, addressing violence against girls in school, and working to change public attitudes. We have supported the Afghan Women and Girls Security Promotion Act, the Gender Based Violence Strategy, and the US National Action Plan for Women, Peace and Security, among others.

Actively support UN conventions and resolutions including Security Council Resolution 1325 and the formation of National Action Plans. 1325 addresses not only the inordinate impact of war on women, but also the pivotal role women should and do play in conflict management, conflict resolution, disarmament demilitarization, and sustainable peace.

Engage with UN Commissions and agencies:

    • The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women. Peace X Peace participates in the annual CSW to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards, and formulate concrete policies that promote gender equality and women’s human rights.  The NGO’s participating in the CSW are developing a comprehensive document [1] on Violence Against Women and Girls.
    • UN Women, the UN entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, works to eliminate discrimination against women and girls; empower women; and achieve equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security. Peace X Peace was a part of drafting the global document ADDRESSING INEQUALITIES: The Heart of the post-2015 Development Agenda and the Future We Want for All [2].

Offer recommendations to US government agencies on key policies affecting women:

      • We have been actively engaged with a variety of government agencies in the development and now implementation of the US National Action Plan (NAP) for Women, Peace and Security. Our civil society coalition was instrumental in the development of the Women, Peace and Security Act of 2012, a bill to ensure that the United States promotes women’s meaningful inclusion and participation in mediation and negotiation processes undertaken to prevent, mitigate, or resolve violent conflict and implements the United States National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security. Our work as a part of the U.S. Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security is outlined in the Timeline of Events 2010-2013 [3].

Support initiatives to reduce discriminatory practices and policies, including Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, and facilitate cross cultural dialogue for deepened understanding.

Provide transformational leadership training to equip women leaders with a range of critical resources and skills to facilitate change, specifically in support of the US National Action Plan for Women, Peace and Security called for under UN SCR 1325.
